Telemedicine and Distance Education

Telemedicine is the practice of medicine using interactive audiovisual communications resources between doctors, patients and researchers in the treatment, educational and research areas. Based on this principle, the Hospital Sírio-Libanês Telemedicine Service was created in October 1999, and incorporated into the Teaching and Research Institute in 2003 to add innovation to its educational methodology.

Ever since the beginning, the focus of the Research and Learning operation has had the aim of updating the knowledge and promoting the improvement of health area professionals through the application of a wide range of technological and interactive resources. These are: classes; lectures; clinical meetings; case discussions and the setting up of collaborative projects. In the treatment area, the IEP promotes interchange between Brazilian and international specialists without the need to move the patient away from his or her family.

The IEP has a lot of technical resources at its disposal and is staffed by highly qualified professionals who can guide, plan, carry out and manage all the distance course and event transmissions, in both the treatment and educational areas.

In the treatment area, the Telemedicine service offers the HSL International Second Opinion service in partnership with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The service also gives virtual support to lato sensu post-graduate courses and Symposiums held at the IEP by means of Distance Education (EAD).

The Telemedicine service has also formed partnerships with several institutions, such as the University of São Paulo Faculty of Medicine, the Aviation Technology Institute, and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Institute of Biophysics amongst others, for the development of the Medical Digital Station project. This has the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology and CNPq, which reinforces its treatment, educational and research character.
