Pain Treatment Service

Aware of the need to provide a complete service, the Hospital Sírio-Libanês offers a Pain Treatment Service. The objective of this program is to enable systematic pain control to prevent discomfort and guarantee the quality of life and the well-being of the Hospital's patients.

The treatment of pain is an Institutional operational and procedural focus. Directed, specialized services are also available for patients with chronic pains. It is important to provide those people, who suffer from pain resulting from chronic diseases or from post-surgical effects, with specialized treatment in order to lessen the negative effects that this sensation can have on their lives. Not only is pain an unpleasant sensory experience, it also affects social and emotional behavior.

From the patient's arrival until the time of discharge, a specialized team carries out systematic checks on pain levels. If there is no fear, the recovery process is quicker, because the suffering brought on by pain and the symptoms of certain diseases are reduced giving patients greater motivation to work in favor of their rehabilitation.

Several methods of pain treatment are used, which are carried out using a multidisciplinary approach. The team is made up of doctors, physiotherapists, nurses and psychologists, and works to provide treatment for different types of painful syndromes.

As well as the Pain Study Groups, composed of health professionals who are interested in researching and studying the subject, medical prescription and nursing protocols have been established which contribute towards expanding knowledge of this subject. The Hospital Sírio-Libanês also invests in training courses on the physiology and evaluation of pain and the handling of specific instruments to control it.

Doctors and nurses at the Hospital Sírio-Libanês also work before, during and after surgeries, to prevent and alleviate pain, during the recovery stage. The control of pain contributes towards comfort and, consequently, to earlier discharge.
