Bone Marrow Transplantation is a therapeutic method developed to treat a number of illnesses, such as leukemia, bone marrow aplasia, lymphomas and multiple myeloma, amongst others. Basically, there are two types of transplant: autologous transplants, which use cells from the patient himself and allogeneic transplants, which use cells from a compatible donor, usually provided by a brother or sister, or by searching for an alternative donor in a bone marrow or umbilical cord bank.
This type of treatment uses highly complex medical resources and is supported by a highly qualified medical team, as well as a multi-professional team consisting of specially trained nurses, pharmacists, dentists, physiotherapists, nutritionists and psychologists who develop specific activities in their own areas, but which are always focused on providing support for the patient and his or her family.
The Hospital Sírio-Libanês Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, which was opened over 10 years ago, is located on the 8th floor of the hospitalization unit and consists of five beds in a private, isolated area, with individual apartments which are equipped with a HEPA filtered air system.
