In 1971, guided by a pioneering spirit and the search for providing a quality treatment, the Hospital Sírio Libanês inaugurated the first Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Brazil. Nowadays the ICU at the Hospital Sírio Libanês is a national benchmark and is internationally recognized as a center of excellence for the treatment of seriously ill patients.
Today, there are 22 beds for adult patients in the ICUs at the Hospital Sírio Libanês. A intensive care team of doctors is dedicated exclusively to the ICU, 24 hours a day, to guarantee efficient, immediate treatment to all patients hospitalized at the unit. Specialist nurses take care of seriously ill patients and physiotherapists, nutritionists and speech therapists complete the team that works in the ICUs. A group of volunteers helps the families of the patients hospitalized in the ICUs during visiting hours.
Our ICUs are appropriately structured to treat patients, who as a result of their illnesses, require constant medical surveillance and nursing care, patients in the post-operation stage of major or highly complex surgical procedures, those who need advanced support for the temporary substitution of the functions of vital organs (e.g.: invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic support, circulatory assistance with an aortic balloon, intermittent or continuous dialysis) or the real time monitoring and control of the vital signs (basic and advanced hemodynamic monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring, continuous electroencephalogram, intensive glycemic control, controlled hypothermia).
